A gentle meander on an undulating high mountain pasture though meadows, woodland and beside scree. Buy a return ticket and take the Sunnbüel gondola up from the southern outskirts of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. Choose your own route on the paths that wind round the verdant bowl of the Spittelmatte.

Almost immediately after exiting the Sunnbüel gondola station (1936m) in late June this year there were splashes of Narcissus-flowered Anemones above the bilberry and juniper.

In the wooded areas bright dots of Yellow Wood Violets burst from the shade.

Baby-pink Birdseye Primroses on their delicate, wobbling stems also jewelled the woodland.
